Optimism Drives Growth in Construction Jobs, UK

Sunday

With a significant percentage of the United Kingdom's workforce currently in the construction industry, one might think that construction jobs UK are hard to find, what with the number of people already in the sector in one way or another. Statistics from the government indicate that over 7 percent of the people in the working age category are in the construction industry as of 2009 - that's more or less equal to 2.2 million workers. Analysts also predict this figure to increase by as much as 6 million by 2012, despite the economy's current dismal condition.

This increase in construction jobs UK is attributed by the ONS to the impressive number of projects in the commercial property sector, followed by the number of projects in the housing industry. Although these projects are spread throughout the entire United Kingdom, most of the work is, and will be, concentrated in the London area because of major infrastructure projects that are set to coincide with the 2012 Summer Olympics. Some of the projects brought about by hosting of the games include massive improvements to the city's public transport system and new facilities to house Olympic events.

As you can see, these proposals translate to a guaranteed increase in construction jobs UK over the next few months. With the 2012 Olympics less than 2 years away, you can expect the number of jobs to double, even triple, as the months go by. Yet even if you take the Olympics out of the picture, the demand for new construction jobs UK has still been on a steady rise. In 2008, also known as the worst economic year of the decade, optimistic analyses were still made about the number of recruits in the construction industry over the next handful of years.

Yet another factor that has contributed to the growth of the UK's construction industry is the advent of sustainable and environment-friendly infrastructure. There is now an initiative to create, as well as overhaul the structure of existing buildings in order to make them more energy-efficient and produce less waste. Of course, such projects will generate thousands upon thousands of jobs in the construction industry in the United Kingdom. And with the current rush to improve the country's infrastructure, homeowners will also be encouraged to upgrade their houses, which will greatly benefit the country's small construction firms.

Yet even if you take the Olympics out of the picture, the demand for new construction jobs UK has still been on a steady rise.
